Myth s a kind of poetical historical collage and I see myself forging artefacts from gaps and traces, where meaning has been lost or eroded. I look at archaic objects, base materials, the archive and museum, but as psychological spaces, and this permeates my practice. He predominantly uses clay and collage, and has also worked across different media and contexts including installation, print, bookworks and illustration. His work has been shown in both gallery and museum spaces such as Outpost, Transition, g39, Hweg, Kingston Museum and The Beaney. Commissions have included projects with the V&amp;A, the British Library and the Poetry Society. Work is held in collections of MOMA Wales, the Brecknock Art Trust and private collections in the UK, Europe and USA. He studied at Central St Martins, UWIC Cardiff (MA) and Kingston School of Art (PhD), creating new visual forms from archival fragments and waste. of words and images that re-make and invent histories, myths and stories. The Arsonist’s Tale&nbsp;began with the burning of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Using fire as the ‘editor’ provided the materialfor a new narrative. In View from a hillside, the myth of Loch Ness is re-presented as a photographic romance across time, and in Chants de Chance, the surrealists’&nbsp; ‘chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table’ gives the structure to an illustrated book of surreal poetry. The connection between a painted portriat and its digital twin is explored as a translation from oil paint to pixel. Each reassembled portrait uses only what is contained in the original painting. There are echoes of the occupations and preoccupations of the sitters. While some speeches are heard by millions, some remain hidden and unspoken, such as President Nixon’s chilling public announcement should Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the Moon. Commissioned by Sheri Gee for Folio.&nbsp;In Praise of Folly' was written in 1512 by Desiderius Erasmus, a humanist thinker and social commentator and is is both the most notorious and in some ways the most characteristic work of the greatest European intellectual of the sixteenth century. My idea was to use Holbein’s work as the basis for a series of new collage as the ‘stages’ or backgrounds. I removed the ‘action’ that Holbein had depicted and created my own – new actors performing on a much older stage.Erasmus’ writing is darkly humourous and uses rhetoric -&nbsp; puns, metaphor and allusions. Double or triple meanings occur throughout In Praise of Folly, and my visuals try to echo this aspect – where an image or object may signify more than one thing. In my illustrations, the intention can be hidden or obvious, veiled or direct. When I was thinking about the character of ‘Folly’, I looked at different places, characterisations and enactments of who Folly was and where she might be found. I looked across time and in different cultures, and especially at the discovery of truth through misrule, mockery and excess.
